Norman M. Thomas (1884-1968) was a prominent American Socialist and Pacifist. He ran for President of the United States six times on  the Socialist Party ticket.

He was also instrumental in founding the American Civil Liberties Union.

Mr. Thomas realized that the freedom-loving American people would never vote for Socialism. So, he created a clever deception to transform America into a Socialist state.

He originated the American form of Liberalism. I am summarizing his idea and paraphrasing it like this, “Comrades, As long as we call ourselves Socialists, nobody is going to vote for us. We’ll ourselves Liberals, but we’ll always be true to the principles of Socialism.”

This is part of a speech that he  made while running for President in 1944:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism, but under the name Liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program until America will one day be a Socialist nation without knowing how it happened.”

Later on, he made the following statement:

“I no longer need to run as a Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”
