Our Constitution is Based on the Bible

The leaders of all thirteen states knew that  the Bible required them to choose God fearing men for their leaders. All thirteen states required that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention be Christians.

When these men came together in 1787, they created the most remarkable Constitution that has ever existed. This Constitution was based on the one thing that they could all agree on, the Holy Bible.

The most distinctive feature of our Constitution is that it separates the powers of government into three equal branches—the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial branches. That was to prevent future leaders from oppressing the people and taking away their power.  James Madison presented this idea to the other delegates and they approved of it.

How did James Madison come up with such a radical idea? He got it from the Bible, from Isaiah 33:22, For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

In other nations, demonstrators cry out, “Power to the people!” In America, the people already hold all the power. We took it away from a tyrannical king who oppressed us. We don’t ever want  to have another king. What is a king? He’s just a man who thinks he knows what’s best for us, oppresses us, and takes away our freedom.  The American people have the power to remove any President who tries to be a king.

The Socialists and Communists want to change America; and they are crying out for a revolution. America has already  had a revolution, and it was the best revolution of all time. It was called the American Revolution, and it used to be taught about in our schools.

The leaders of the American Revolution were Christian leaders. The French had a revolution at about the same time; but all they did was to trade in their king for a group of tyrants who oppressed them. These French rulers had no idea what they were doing. They made Christianity and even the worship of God illegal.

That is the same conflict that we are facing today. We have one group of leaders who worships and honors God; and another group who are always trying to discredit God and pull him off his throne. Which one of the two do you want to represent you in government?

How Do We Know Who to Vote For?

I love reading quotes from the writings of godly people, because they are nuggets of wisdom and truth. I want to introduce you to Noah Webster, and to some of the things he said about the Bible and about selecting candidates for public office.

Noah Webster practically invented public education in America. His American Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1828, was our first dictionary. His “Blue-Backed Speller” was the most widely used textbook in America for a hundred years. He said “Education is useless without the Bible.” And he explained why this is true.

“The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all of our civil constitutions and laws. …All of the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.

Mr. Webster included this advice on voting to the young readers of his American History textbook. He told them who to vote for.

“In selecting men for public office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate—look to his character. It is alleged by men of loose principles, or defective views of the subject, that religion and morality are not necessary or important qualifications for political stations. But the scriptures teach a different doctrine. They direct that rulers should be men who rule in the fear of God, men of truth, hating covetousness.

It is to the neglect of this rule that we must ascribe the multiplied frauds, breaches of trust, speculations and embezzlements of public property which astound even ourselves; which tarnish the character of our country and which disgrace our government.

When a citizen gives his vote to a man of known immorality, he abuses his civic responsibility; he not only sacrifices his own responsibility; he sacrifices not only his own interest, but those of his neighbor; he betrays the interest of his country.”

Mr. Webster’s advise makes perfect sense, but we have done just the opposite of what he said. We have been led to believe that religion has no place in politics, or in government; but that’s not true. Our Constitution and our government are based on principles of the Bible, and that’s why they work so well.

Thinking Like Jesus Thinks

The Pharisees and the Saduccees Come to Tempt ...

The Pharisees and the Saduccees Come to Tempt Jesus (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were divided into two sects, the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Both groups were experts in the Book of the Law. Now, the Pharasees believed in the resurrection of the dead, but the Sadducees didn’t. The Sadducess were sad, you see, because they didn’t believe in life after death. Members of both sects were constantly trying to catch Jesus in an error regarding the scriptures.

The Sadducees tried to outwit Jesus by asking him a hypothetical question; but they got their head handed to them, figuratively speaking.  If a man died and left a widow, the Law of Moses required his brother to take her as his wife, so that the first man would not be without descendents.  This is the question that the  Sadducees asked Jesus:  What if there were seven brothers and six of them died one by one. In heaven, which of the brothers would be her husband?

They thought they were leading Jesus into a swamp from which there was no escapt ; but he didn’t fall for it. This is what Jesus said to the Sadducees:

You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

But as touching the resurrction of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Issac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

Jesus pointed out that, based on the scriptures, God was saying that Abraham, Issac, and Jacob are still alive and they are with him. The word of God is truth. When you know the truth, you can build on that foundation to know more things that are true. This is the example that Jesus set for us, so that we can increase our knowledge, building truth upon truth, precept upon precept. When we need the answer to a question, all we have to do is to find out what God says about it in the Bible.

That should have been the end of the matter, but it wasn’t.  The Sadducees should have just disbanded then, but they didn’t. They didn’t care about God’s own truth.  They loved their religion more than they loved God ir the truth. They wanted to keep on basing their lives on what they think is true. They have since learned that they were wrong.

There are millions of people today who are just like the Sadducees. They have taken the ideas they like which are lies, such as reincarnation, and cobble them together into their own private religion. These same people are going to hell because they have rejected the truth of the word of God.

How To Be Born Again

English: Holy Spirit depicted as the dove (det...

Image via Wikipedia

When Adam joined Satan’s rebellion, he sold all of his descendants into slavery to sin. That’s why all of us are spiritually dead and separated from God, when we are born physically. We are born into Satan’s Kingdom.

All of us, that is, except for Jesus. Since God is his Father, Jesus is the Second Adam. He’s not subject to the law of sin and death like we are. Because he never sinned, his death on the cross has paid the penalty for your sins.

He died (physically) so that you can live (spiritually.) His obedience to God has reversed the effect of Adam’s disobedience.

You are born again when you put your faith in Jesus Christ. That’s when Jesus becomes your Redeemer and your Savior; and you’re no longer a slave to sin. You are translated from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of God.

Redemption and Salvation can only be obtained by grace (the unmerited favor of God;) and, they can only be received through faith in Jesus Christ. (Faith is belief in action.)

Salvation is a free gift from God. He had to give it to us because we can not earn it for ourselves. “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

If you have never made Jesus the Lord of your life, I urge you to do it now. This is the most important decision you will ever make, because your answer determines your eternal destiny.

Will you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, or will you continue to reject him? Do you choose life, or death?Heaven, or Hell?

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6). You cannot have the Father without the Son, because Jesus and God are inseparable.

There is one true Living God. His name is the Lord of Hosts. He is also called Jehovah and Yahweh. He created the earth and all living things. He’s the God of the Bible. He’s the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. He’s the God of Moses, and he’s the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. All other “gods” are nothing but idols.

God consists of three persons: The Father, who is God in Heaven—Jesus, who is God in human form—and the Holy Spirit, who is God in you.

The Holy Spirit gives you life. He baptizes you into the Body of Believers, and he seals you until the Day of Redemption. When he comes to live in you, he will give you a new heart—a heart full of love. He will change your desires, and give you peace, and joy, and self-control.

The Holy Spirit will give you the desire to please God, and then he will empower you to fulfill that desire. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

If you want to be born again, pray this prayer: “Heavenly Father, I believe in my heart that Jesus is the Son of God, and that you raised him from the dead. I repent of all my sins, and I make Jesus Lord of my life right now. Please send your Holy Spirit to live in me forever. Thank you for saving me and for adopting me into your family. In Jesus name, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer and meant it, you are now a child of God. All of your sins are forgiven and you have Eternal Life. You’re in right-standing with God. You’re a citizen of Heaven and a joint-heir with Jesus. You’re a new creation in Jesus Christ.

These blessings are yours because Jesus did you a favor (grace), and you received it through faith. Grace is God’s part of the deal and faith is yours. “Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed …” (Romans 4:16)

Now that you’re a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, God’s Spirit will come to live in you. He is a very powerful ally. He will change you from the inside out. He will empower you to do things that seem impossible, like overcoming addictions. He is the same Spirit that raised up Jesus from the dead, and nothing is impossible for him.

You are never alone, because the Spirit of Christ is always with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. As long as you’re walking with God, you don’t have to be afraid of anybody or anything. You don’t have to be afraid of dying, because for you, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)

Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

Bible Reading~Devotion

Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. –Author unknown

The Bible says, As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. (Proverbs 23:7) Whatever you think about the most is what you will become. Here’s how to make this principle work for you instead of against you.

When your mind is focused on carnal, or “fleshy,” things, you’re going to do those things. The Bible is righteousness. When you focus your attention on it, you’re going to do what it says. When you’re doing what the Bible says, you’re doing righteousness. The Bible is the written word of God, and it’s all about Jesus, the living Word of God.

If you want to change your life, you have to change your mind. You have to abandon your old carnal thoughts, and replace them with God’s thoughts. That means you have to study the Bible for yourself, and apply it to your life. That’s renewing your mind. It’s replacing your old carnal thoughts with God’s thoughts. The Apostle Paul described it like this:

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:17-24 NIV)

Believing the Bible

4335840947_14026b2da5Memory Verse:  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Bible is the best selling book of all time. At least a hundred million copies are sold each year; and more than six billion copies  have been distributed throughout the world. Why is it so popular? Because people believe it. They know that it is true. Sixty-three percent of American adults believe that the Bible is the word of God. (Rasmussen Reports)

The Bible was written by men, but God told them what to say. “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:2) When Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, he wrote what God told him to write. He recorded ideas that originated in the mind of God, such as the Ten Commandments.

People who think they’re smart usually know nothing about life. God is smarter than all of us put together, and he actually does know everything. All of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are to be found in him. Since he’s God and we’re not, he gets to make the rules. He gets to say what’s right and wrong, not us. The Ten Commandments are God’s rules for living a happy and successful life.

The Bible is God’s testimony, and it is truth. Satan keeps telling the same old lie. He insists that the truth is not true. He says, the Bible’s not true; there is no God; there’s no such thing as right or wrong; and there is no such thing as truth. He tries to keep everyone in the dark and keep them from hearing the truth of God’s word.

Truth is the most power weapon we have. When you know what the Bible says, you’ll be armed with the truth; and you won’t believe the lies of the Devil. He will have no power over you, and you will be free from his influence.

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32) When you believe the Bible, you will know that God is our Creator. You will know Jesus, the Son of God, and you will be part of the Kingdom of God.

Abraham knew God, and he “staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” (Romans 4:20-21)

He acted like he believed what God said. In fact, he based his whole life on it. That’s the same kind of faith you have. That’s how you became a Christian. You believed that Jesus died for you, that your sins would be forgiven, and that God raised him from the dead. You believed that the Bible is true.

It is your job as a Christian to believe the Bible to such an extent that you base your life on it. That is the kind of faith that pleases God, the faith he accounts as righteousness.

Spending Time With God

Open Bible with pen

“Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. ” (Job 22:21)

Reading an author’s work always makes you feel like you know him. That’s because he reveals his heart and his mind through his work. This is especially true of God, as the author of the Bible. When I was writing my first book, The Bible Believer’s Handbook, I spent thousands of hours studying the Bible. I didn’t know that I was also spending time with the Lord. That is how I got to know him and how to communicate with him.

If you want to know the Lord, you will have to read and study the Bible on your own. Nobody else can do it for you. There is no substitute time spent fellowshipping with God in his word. I think that’s what he is telling us in this verse, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

If I never spent any time with my wife, and I never talked to her, she would think that I didn’t love her. Because, when you love somebody, you want to spend time with them and talk to them. The Lord knows whether you love him or not. “But if any man love God, the same is known of him.” (1 Corinthians 8:3) It’s very important that you learn to love the Lord. You do that by spending time with him.

Marriage is a picture of the relationship Jesus wants to have with you. In an ideal marriage, the wife wants to please her husband and the husband wants to please his wife. Marie is my best friend and we’ve been married for forty-four years. I love her and I want to please her. We are both married to Jesus. We love him and we want to please him.

But it wasn’t always like this. I was a sorry excuse for a husband at first. I thought that the world revolved around me. My hopes and dreams and my career took priority over everything else. Marie was nothing like me. She was different from everyone I had ever known. I could see Jesus in her. I wanted to be like her, so I became a Christian too. I was a sorry excuse for a Christian at first. But God changed me from the inside out. He gave me a new heart—a heart full of love for God and man.

I recommend that you meet with God at the same time every day. The early morning hours are best. It’s easier to hear from God when everything is quiet and still. You can talk to him about anything you want. But, don’t be surprised when he starts to answer your prayers.

Renewing Your Mind

Tree Beside the Saint John River
Image by Chris Campbell via Flickr

Memory Verse: And be not conformed to this world: But be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  (Romans 12:2)

The Objective: To become more like Jesus by understanding God’s word and learning his ways.

How to Do it: Read and study the Bible daily. Meditate on what you’ve read and apply it to your life.

God has given you a heart full of love. But you’re responsible for renewing the mind that you have. God’s thoughts are not your thoughts, and his ways are not your ways. You have to learn new ways of thinking and new ways to be. God’s wisdom and knowledge are available to you through his word and through his Spirit.

The spiritually dead have to rely on their own brain power. It’s all they have. They can’t figure out the things of God, because they can’t be figured out. They are revealed to you by the Holy Spirit. The people of the world simply cannot understand that it benefits them to serve God.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)

“The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” (Romans 8:7) NLT

You used to be like that yourself. Your mind was fully set on fulfilling the desires of your flesh. But now you’re learning how to please God instead.

The Holy Spirit is your mentor and your tutor. He is the greatest teacher of all time. He knows everything about the Bible because he wrote it. He knows everything about God because he is God. He knows everything about science because he is the Creator. He knows everything about history because he was there when it happened; and, he’s always available to you because he lives in you.

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance. But, you can’t remember things that you never learned. That’s why you have to study the Bible for yourself. “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Reading and studying the Bible is a way of fellowshiping with God. He reveals his heart and mind through his book, and that’s how you get to know him. Jesus will eventually become so real, it will seem like he stepped right out of the pages of the Bible.

The Holy Spirit will explain what you don’t understand; And you will have a continuous dialogue with him concerning the Bible. You will become a reservoir of God’s wisdom, and then this scripture will apply to you:

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth is fruit in due season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (Psalm 1:1-3)

Here’s What I Was Doing Wrong

Lake Delton, WI, June 23, 2008 - This house an...
Image via Wikipedia

I asked God, “Why are bad things happening to me? What am I doing wrong? And he answered me with the following scripture:

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:46-48)

That explains it! That’s what I was doing wrong! I was the foolish man who built his house upon the sand. My spiritual house collapsed because it had no foundation. It could not stand up against the storms of life. It had to fail. It couldn’t do anything else.

God didn’t cause those bad things to happen. I did. I set myself up for failure when I ignored God’s instructions. It was impossible for me to succeed. “Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper?” (2 Chronicles 24:20)

I was calling myself a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ. But, I wasn’t following him; I was following me. I was calling Jesus my Lord; but I wasn’t doing a thing he told me to do. I had to give up the control of my life and turn it over to him; and that’s what I did.

I made up my mind, that, for the rest of my life, I would do everything that Jesus told me to do. I turned my back on sin forever, and that’s what the Bible calls “repentance.” Since that time I have made it my habit to follow the Lord’s commandments as recorded in the Bible.

A Christian In Name Only

Sunday Morning Service
Image via Wikipedia

When I was about twelve years old, I asked Jesus to be my personal Savior. I made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. I walked down the aisle of a church during the altar call, and shook the preachers hand. I was baptized in water, and became a member of the church.

I thought I had done everything that God required, that I was a Christian and I was on my way to heaven. I loved going to church, listening to the sermons, and singing the songs. There was only one problem. I wasn’t born-again. I wasn’t any different than I was before. I was still self-centered or self-absorbed. Everything revolved around me and my hopes and dreams.

God was good to me. He gave me a beautiful wife and three lovely little girls and I wanted to be a good husband and father.

That’s when I found out what I was doing wrong.  I had never been converted, or regenerated, by the Holy Spirit. I was a Christian in name only, because I had not experienced the new birth.

I did everything I knew to do. But I didn’t know that God requires us to repent of sin.

I was sitting in church when I decided to turn away from sin forever. I told the Lord that I was going to follow him for the rest of my life, no matter what. That I was going to do everything he wanted me to do. And that is what the Bible calls repentance.

I didn’t walk down the aisle of the church again. This was something between God and me. That decision I made thirty-six years ago changed my life forever. God gave me a new heart, and he put his Spirit in me just like the Bible said he would.

That’s how I went from being a Christian in name only to being a born-again believer. And if you’re a Christian in name only, “you’re not far from the Kingdom of God.” You’re close but you’re not there.

When you repent of sin and follow Jesus, he will change you from the inside out. He will equip you to do the things he requires of you. He will give you the faith, love, joy, peace, and self-control you need to live for him. You will see the promises of God fulfilled in your life, and God will show you his favor.
