The Missing Ingredient in American Life

Geneva Bible
Image via Wikipedia

Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. (Hosea 4:1)

God goes on to say, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

These scriptures certainly apply to the United States of America. They accurately describe what we are lacking—truth, love, and knowledge of God. The major difficulties that we face—our economic crisis, our run-away government, and the war on terror—are  just symptoms of the real problem, which is a lack of knowledge of God. We don’t know him and we don’t know what he says in the Bible.

The Bible was America’s textbook until it was banned from our public schools. Now, the majority of Americans know nothing about it. The Bible is the greatest treasure we have. It is the source of essential truths that everyone needs to know, to save them from destruction. Here are some examples:

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 2:5)

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The Ten Commandments in America

Moses with the tablets of the Ten Commandments...

The Ten Commandments are the best laws ever devised, because they came from God. They are the foundation on which America stands. The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are based on God’s precepts. The Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

When God gave us the Ten Commandments, he promised that if we obeyed them, “it will be well with thee, and ye may increase mightily.”

“Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”  (Deuteronomy 6:3-7)

Fifty years ago, every school child in America was familiar with the Ten Commandments. Now they’ve been forgotten, because it’s illegal to teach them in public schools. Here are the forbidden teachings of God, the Ten Commandments, that are banned by the same Federal government that is based on them.

“I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:  But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Neither shalt thou steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife,  thou shalt not covet thy neighbours’s  manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox,  nor his ass,  nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” (Exodus 20:2-17)

The Ten Commandments are a gift from God. He ordered us to teach them to our children. When we observed God’s commandments, we enjoyed his blessing. In fact, God has blessed America more than any nation that has ever existed. Why? Because, we are his people and our nation was founded on his word. God did exactly what the Bible said he would do. This is an accurate description of the blessings we used to enjoy:

“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.

Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways.

And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:” (Deuteronomy 28:1-13 )

We used to be blessed in the city and blessed in the field. Our enemies feared us because we were stronger than them. We were the head and not the tail. We loaned money to many nations, instead of borrowing it from them. Now, everything is reversed. We are cursed in the city and cursed in the field. Our enemies are attacking us at home and mocking us for our weakness and lack of wisdom. We are the tail and not the head. We are borrowing trillions of dollars from other nations.

So, where did we go wrong? Our government turned against God, and abandoned the Ten Commandments. However, there are millions and millions of Christians in America, and we are free to observe them as we worship the Lord.

If we seek him and keep his commandments, he will bless us and heal our land. We are not like any other nation. We are God’s people. America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. All we have to do is act like who we are.

The Bible says that the things that happened to the Children of Israel were examples for us. God told them, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing, therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Life is obeying the Lord, and death is rebelling against him. The Children of Israel chose death. The whole nation rebelled against God, except for Joshua and Caleb. God always rewards those who obey him, and punishes those who rebel against him. He was merciful to the Children of Israel and provided for their basic needs, but they had lost their reward. They missed the Promised Land and had to wander around in the wilderness until they died.

Their children went into the Promised Land, led by Joshua and Caleb. God made them into a mighty nation. But, eventually, they turned against the Lord and worshipped other gods. That is when they lost everything:  The nation of Israel was lost, the Temple was destroyed, the gold of the Temple were carried away to Babylon, and God’s people went into slavery. America could face a similar fate—except for one thing. We have a very powerful ally, the One True and Living God. We are members of his family through Jesus Christ, and everyone who opposes him loses.

He is the Creator of the Universe. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is The LORD your God. He made America a mighty nation. He will fight for us, just like he did in the American Revolution.

Our times are like those that Americans faced in 1776. A tyrannical government was confiscating everything they had. American Patriots had to take drastic action to keep themselves and their children from being slaves to their government. They fought and won the liberty that we still enjoy today. They shed their blood for us. They were with God, and God was with them.

Now, we are facing the most important Presidential election in our history. It will determine your children’s future and the future of America. You are not just voting for a man, for Romney or Obama, you are voting for the ideas that they represent.

If you vote for Obama, you’re voting for an ever-expanding government that confiscates everything you have through higher and higher taxes. A government that is spending our grandchildren into massive debt that they can never pay off.  A government that takes away our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If you vote for Romney, you’re voting for a return to the principles that made America great. You’ve voting for a smaller government that spends much less money. A government that lets you keep more of your hard-earned money to spend on your family. A government that leaves you alone and lets you enjoy your freedom.

Be sure that you’re registered to vote, show up at the polls on election day, and vote. If you usually don’t vote,  please vote in this election. It’s really important. Do it for your children and your grandchildren. Do it for your neighbors, your fellow Americans. Do it for the Lord, and do it for America.

Our Constitution is Based on the Bible

English: Painting, 1856, by Junius Brutus Stea...

English: Painting, 1856, by Junius Brutus Stearns, Washington at Constitutional Convention of 1787, signing of U.S. Constitution. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The leaders of all thirteen states knew that  the Bible required them to choose God fearing men for their leaders. All thirteen states required that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention be Christians.

When these men came together in 1787, they created the most remarkable Constitution that has ever existed. This Constitution was based on the one thing that they could all agree on, the Holy Bible.

The most distinctive feature of our Constitution is that it separates the powers of government into three equal branches—the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial branches. That was to prevent future leaders from oppressing the people and taking away their power.  James Madison presented this idea to the other delegates and they approved of it.

How did James Madison come up with such a radical idea? He got it from the Bible, from Isaiah 33:22, For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

In other nations, demonstrators cry out, “Power to the people!” In America, the people already hold all the power. We took it away from a tyrannical king who oppressed us. We don’t ever want  to have another king. What is a king? He’s just a man who thinks he knows what’s best for us, oppresses us, and takes away our freedom.  The American people have the power to remove any President who tries to be a king.

The Socialists and Communists want to change America; and they are crying out for a revolution. America has already  had a revolution, and it was the best revolution of all time. It was called the American Revolution, and it used to be taught about in our schools.

The leaders of the American Revolution were Christian leaders. The French had a revolution at about the same time; but all they did was to trade in their king for a group of tyrants who oppressed them. These French rulers had no idea what they were doing. They made Christianity and even the worship of God illegal.

That is the same conflict that we are facing today. We have one group of leaders who worships and honors God; and another group who are always trying to discredit God and pull him off his throne. Which one of the two do you want to represent you in government?

Heaven Is For Real

This is my book review of Heaven is For Real, A Little Boy‘s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven And Back, by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent.

Today is my sixty-fourth birthday, and I’m rejoicing today with Marie, the wife of my youth. We’ve been married for forty-four years, and God has really blessed us. He gave us three lovely daughters to know and to love; and we think of their husbands as being our sons. The Lord has further blessed us with thirteen amazing grandchildren.

Autumn has always been my favorite season; and I’m enjoying the autumn of my life. Marie and I are reaping the rewards of a lifetime of working together.

We know that we are going to Heaven when we die. Not because of anything that we have done, but because of what Jesus did for us. “For by grace are ye saved by faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

So, I’ve been thinking a lot about heaven lately. I’m looking forward to seeing my Dad again, and my grandparents. Marie is looking forward to seeing her Mother and Dad again, along with three of her brothers and her sister, who have all gone to heaven before us.

Marie and I both read Heaven Is For Real, and we highly recommend it. Colton Burpo was three years old when he died and went to heaven. Jesus answered his daddy’s prayer, and sent him back to earth. In this book, he tells us what heaven is like. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I’ll only tell you two things that Colton says about heaven. He says when you die, that Jesus is the first person you see; and, he says that nobody is old in heaven. We believe that his story is true.

We already knew that heaven is for real. But it’s comforting and reassuring to read the testimony of someone who’s actually been there.

Doing What Is Right

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)

People used to be a lot wiser than they are today. They were familiar with God’s word and they knew how life works. I used to work with men who were a generation older than me. Whenever something good happened to one of them, the others would tell him, “You must be living right.” They knew that God rewards those who do what is right, and he punishes those who don’t. Most people today have never read this verse, “For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy.” (Ecclesiastes 2:26)

The Lord knows our hearts, and he wants us to be motivated by love. We know that sin is showing a lack of love for others. Sins are the stupid mistakes we make that prevent God from rewarding us. “I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins (motives), even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jeremiah 23:24)

The word “Righteousness” is used two ways in the Bible:

(1) Your salvation is not based on the righteousness you do. It’s based on the righteousness of Jesus Christ. God counts your faith in Jesus as righteousness, and righteousness is right-standing with God.

(2) Righteousness is the opposite of sin. It’s doing what’s right. When you’re doing what the Bible says, you’re doing righteousness. “And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.” (Deuteronomy 6:25)

God has promised to reward you for your righteousness. “Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.” (Proverbs 11:31)

SO WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

Your flesh, or your old sin nature, is your enemy. It is driven by lusts, and it wants what it wants when it wants it. It never stops trying to get its own way. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like . . . (Galatians 5:19-21)

First Corinthians 13 describes what God’s love is like. Your flesh is the exact opposite of that. Your flesh is: impatient, unkind, envious, boastful, proud, rude, self-seeking, and easily angered. It keeps a record of wrongs, delights in evil, rejoices with lies, never protects, never trusts, never hopes, never perseveres. And it always fails.

If your flesh is running your life, you cannot possibly succeed. You’re closing the door to God’s blessing and his favor.

The only way to overcome your flesh is to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit minute by minute. That is what the Bible calls, walking in the Spirit. “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

All of God’s promises are like contracts. Put your faith to work by doing what God says; and, then you will receive what he’s promised. When you do your part, God will do his part. When you’re keeping the Love commandment, your faith is working because “faith works by love.” The master key to all of the promises of God is loving your neighbor as yourself.

THE PROBLEM IS SIN

Sin is violating the Love Commandment, and it prevents God from blessing you. “Your sins have withholden good things from you.”(Jeremiah 5:25) Love is fulfilling the law. When you’re loving your neighbor, you’re loving God too, because you’re obeying him. You’re expressing your faith in God and his word.

SIN IS BASED ON PRIDE

In my life, I had to face reality. I found out that I was not as smart as I thought. I thought that I could get everything I needed on my own, but I was wrong. I tried running my own life and failed miserably at it. The best decision I ever made was to surrender control of my life to God.

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BASED ON LOVE

Righteousness is the opposite of sin. It is loving God. Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for good to those who love God.” You know when you’re keeping the Love Commandment, and when you’re not keeping it. If you want this promise of God fulfilled in your life, you have to love your neighbor as yourself.

GOD SHOWS FAVOR TO THE RIGHTEOUS

“For you, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor you will surround him as with a shield.” (Psalm 5:12 NKJV)

Spending Time With God

Open Bible with pen

“Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. ” (Job 22:21)

Reading an author’s work always makes you feel like you know him. That’s because he reveals his heart and his mind through his work. This is especially true of God, as the author of the Bible. When I was writing my first book, The Bible Believer’s Handbook, I spent thousands of hours studying the Bible. I didn’t know that I was also spending time with the Lord. That is how I got to know him and how to communicate with him.

If you want to know the Lord, you will have to read and study the Bible on your own. Nobody else can do it for you. There is no substitute time spent fellowshipping with God in his word. I think that’s what he is telling us in this verse, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

If I never spent any time with my wife, and I never talked to her, she would think that I didn’t love her. Because, when you love somebody, you want to spend time with them and talk to them. The Lord knows whether you love him or not. “But if any man love God, the same is known of him.” (1 Corinthians 8:3) It’s very important that you learn to love the Lord. You do that by spending time with him.

Marriage is a picture of the relationship Jesus wants to have with you. In an ideal marriage, the wife wants to please her husband and the husband wants to please his wife. Marie is my best friend and we’ve been married for forty-four years. I love her and I want to please her. We are both married to Jesus. We love him and we want to please him.

But it wasn’t always like this. I was a sorry excuse for a husband at first. I thought that the world revolved around me. My hopes and dreams and my career took priority over everything else. Marie was nothing like me. She was different from everyone I had ever known. I could see Jesus in her. I wanted to be like her, so I became a Christian too. I was a sorry excuse for a Christian at first. But God changed me from the inside out. He gave me a new heart—a heart full of love for God and man.

I recommend that you meet with God at the same time every day. The early morning hours are best. It’s easier to hear from God when everything is quiet and still. You can talk to him about anything you want. But, don’t be surprised when he starts to answer your prayers.

Here’s What I Was Doing Wrong

Lake Delton, WI, June 23, 2008 - This house an...
Image via Wikipedia

I asked God, “Why are bad things happening to me? What am I doing wrong? And he answered me with the following scripture:

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:46-48)

That explains it! That’s what I was doing wrong! I was the foolish man who built his house upon the sand. My spiritual house collapsed because it had no foundation. It could not stand up against the storms of life. It had to fail. It couldn’t do anything else.

God didn’t cause those bad things to happen. I did. I set myself up for failure when I ignored God’s instructions. It was impossible for me to succeed. “Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper?” (2 Chronicles 24:20)

I was calling myself a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ. But, I wasn’t following him; I was following me. I was calling Jesus my Lord; but I wasn’t doing a thing he told me to do. I had to give up the control of my life and turn it over to him; and that’s what I did.

I made up my mind, that, for the rest of my life, I would do everything that Jesus told me to do. I turned my back on sin forever, and that’s what the Bible calls “repentance.” Since that time I have made it my habit to follow the Lord’s commandments as recorded in the Bible.

The Advantage of Being a Christian

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Hananiah, Mis...
Image via Wikipedia

I can understand how anyone would be reluctant to turn their life over to God. I have had those same feelings. It’s just fear. The fear that you’re going to miss out on something, and not be able to live life to the fullest. Years ago,  I pushed past that fear, and made Jesus the Lord of my life. That was the best decision I ever made in my life. Listen to my story and you’ll know why.

My story is really the story of two people, my wife and I. We’re Larry and Marie. I met Marie in 1966. We were singing in the youth choir at Westhaven Baptist Church in Memphis. We fell in love, got married, raised three lovely daughters, and now were are grandparents to eleven exceptional grandchildren. There can be no doubt that God put us together.

We have walked together with the Lord for the past forty-two years. Like everyone else, we’ve faced some challenges. We call them our “fiery furnace experiences.” That’s a reference to one our favorite stories in the Bible. The one in which Shadrack, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into King Nebuchadnezzar’s flaming fiery furnace.

A fiery furnace is an intense situation from which there’s no escape, You have to go through it, and you just hope that you’ll survive it. The most exciting part of that Old Testament story is there was a Fourth Man in there with them. Because of him, they didn’t just survive that fiery furnace, they were dancing around in it.

Who was that Fourth Man? It was Jesus. It was the same Jesus who is available to you when you are “going through the fire.” Life is full of fiery furnaces—health problems, marital problems, family problems, financial problems. There are going to be times when you need God. Because nobody else can help you. That’s the advantage of being a Christian. The Lord is already there with you and he will help you.

Marie and I have just faced the greatest challenge of our lives. We were in the fiery furnace. But the Fourth Man was right there with us, taking care of us— just like the Bible says he would.

But now thus saith the Lord that created thee . . . Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  Isaiah 43:1-2 KJV

NLT © When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.
MSG © When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end-

Marie had quadruple by-pass surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital, in Memphis Tennessee on October 14, 2009. We had a great peace about it, and expected only the best. We were trusting the Lord to take care of her, and claiming the promises of God’s protection contained in Psalm 91.

The surgery was a success and Marie was a model patient.  She went home and was recovering quickly. Then we discovered that she had a staph infection that had been contracted during the surgery.  The Doctors were able to wipe it out with massive doses of antibiotics.

On November 5, Marie had a second surgery to remove the bone and tissue damaged by the infection. On November 11, she had a third surgery to close the wound in her chest which was four inches wide and eight inches long. Now, she is back at home and recovering well.

She could have died from that infection. But God preserved her life, and we thank him for that every day. And we thank Jesus for being there with us the whole time. He comforted us, and we experienced his peace, his faith, and his love.

Because of Jesus, the story of Larry and Marie is not over yet. We know that God loves us. We experienced his love firsthand every day of the crisis.

And now, we simply must tell everyone how great Jesus is and what he has done for us. We trusted him to take care of us, and he did. What a mighty God we serve!

The Lord has done great things for us; whereof we are glad!  Psalm 126:3

Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant!  Psalm 35:27

O, give thanks unto the Lord for he is good; because his mercy endureth forever!  Psalm 118:1

The chief advantage of being a Christian is having Jesus as your personal friend. He’s a friend who loves you and cares about you. He’s the best friend you will ever have, and he will never leave you nor forsake you.

How I Became a Christian Author

When I was twenty-one years, I served in the Army in Vietnam; and I thank God that my name isn’t on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington. I thought that I got away scot-free, but thirty years later, I was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic-Stress-Order.

PTSD is like the devil. It steals your joy and it steals your life. My doctors saw that I couldn’t control my anger, and they took me off work. So, I spent a year on sick leave, and then took a disability retirement.

American soldiers never “retreat.” We just “fall back and regroup,” and that’s what I had to do. I was in trouble, and I needed God’s help. I spent that year reading the Bible from cover-to-cover. I didn’t know what I was doing at the time; but I was fellowshipping with God in his word. I became fascinated with God’s word. I copied down the Bible verses that seemed most significant to me, and put them together in a book. That book of verses eventually became my first published book, The Bible Believer’s Handbook.

When you read an author’s work, it makes you feel like you know him. That’s because he reveals his heart and his mind through his words. This is especially true of God, who is the Author of the Bible.

I had swerved into doing exactly what the following passage of Scripture says to do. I was delighting in the law of the Lord, and meditating on it day and night. I became like the man who is described in these verses, and that put me on a collision course with the blessing of God.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1-3)

It took the Federal bureaucracy a very long time to process my disability retirement. My sick leave ran out, and I had no income. When all of my savings were gone, I was at the end of my rope.  I was old, and broke, and too sick to work; and, I didn’t know if I would ever be able to work again.

I had hit rock bottom, and I knew that God was my only hope. I cried out to him in desperation, “Jesus, please help me!” Jesus heard my prayer and he answered it.

The first thing that he did was to get rid of my anger. I went to bed mad at the world, just like I did every night; and when I woke up, my anger was gone. That intense anger, which had been my constant companion for thirty years, just disappeared. Jesus took it away, and he replaced it with joy and peace. I knew that I had experienced a miracle!

I heard somebody laughing, and then, I realized that it was me. I hadn’t laughed in years. Jesus healed me, just like he healed all of those people in the Bible. I was like blind Bartimaeus, who cried out to Jesus, “Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:47) I had done the same thing that he did, and I got the same result. I had acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, and cried out to him for help; and he had mercy on me.

These Bible verses explain what Jesus did for me, and I will never stop thanking him for it. “I waited patiently for the Lord: and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of miry pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:1-3)

The next thing that he did was to put me back to work. He gave me a new job, with better pay. I didn’t do anything to be treated so well, but Jesus gave me the help that I needed. He has saved me spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and financially. That’s who he is and what he does. He is our Savior. He does the things for us that we could never do for ourselves.

Jesus loves you and he cares about you. If you’re in trouble, call on him; and he will help. My testimony is that Jesus’ words are true. He said, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21)
